The Grand Tour Presents Lochdown drops on Amazon Prime Video on Friday as Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond head off on a road trip around Scotland. However, speaking to Express.co.uk and other press, Richard admitted he had experienced a “heartbreaking” problem with his vehicle of choice during production.
Jeremy, James and Richard embark on the road trip each behind the wheel of an American muscle car.
Richard’s vehicle of choice for the Scotland special is a Buick Riviera as piloted by Clint Eastwood.
The Grand Tour host was eager to drive the Detroit machine but was stopped in his tracks.
Halfway through the Scottish road trip, Richard’s car broke down and he was forced to pause his 70s dream.
Opening up on the moment, he described: “[I was] absolutely heartbroken and that’s just my luck I mean it just died on me.
“I love the Riviera and I’d never had one. I was looking forward to driving, and then it decided to stop going along anymore.”
Richard explained The Grand Tour team had to call in reinforcements to help move the car.
“We had to call for support on that one because it had to be towed away and it’s a big car,” he quipped.
“They only made it for a couple of years, and then the particular one I bought was falling apart,” Richard explained.
“It was really badly overheating and then I modified it and I made it a lot worse.
“So my choice of car wasn’t brilliant if I’m honest [but] I still have it, I took it home, it still doesn’t work.”
Explaining why he kept the vehicle, he added: “I can restore it and I still think it’s really striking and it could make a fabulous car.
“I could make a nice custom job of it, I’ll do something fun with it, I’ll turn it into something else.”
In the Scotland special, Jeremy and James race alongside Richard in a Cadillac Coupe De Ville and Lincoln Continental.
The presenting duo will put an infamous Pizza Express journey to the test with the classic muscle cars amongst other testing challenges.
The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown will launch Friday July 30 on Amazon Prime Video
